Teaching Philosophy

Welcome to KeyzStudioz!

KeyzStudioz is open to all persons regardless of age, ability, experience, ethnic background, learning style, personal challenges, or belief system. Respect of all persons is mandatory at KeyzStudioz. Discrimination of any sort will not be tolerated.

I once had a teacher who said, “I teach life through the piano.” That statement so impacted me it has become the crux of my teaching philosophy. I change my approach, repertoire, and tactics as necessary to best fit the student’s need so she can learn and become the most whole person possible having an open and generous heart to courageously impact the world around her in a positive way.

I believe all my students are expert learners, can play well, have something important and unique to express, are able to improve upon themselves, and can teach me something in the process. I work to express love and care to each of my students assuming another may not fulfill that responsibility. Where my students are, that is where I go, and I walk alongside them on the path as they propel to higher heights.

Hello and welcome!

I have been living in the Iowa Corridor since 2007. In 2017, I graduated with a doctoral degree from the University of Iowa in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. I obtained a Master’s degree from The University of Toledo, and a Bachelor's degree in French and in Piano Performance from Ball State University after starting piano at 8 years old. Prior to beginning graduate school, I studied piano in Lille, France, for three years. I subsequently pursued many additional studies abroad including in France, England, Germany, Austria, and Mallorca for piano, harpsichord, and German.

Even though teaching has been a part of my life since elementary school, I didn’t begin teaching music until the end of high school. My music teaching experience includes piano, flute, improvisation, music theory, aural skills, chamber music, group classes, partner lessons, preschoolers, college students, adult beginners, the natural talent, and both the learning and behaviorally challenged.

As a foster parent, I frequently engage with children who have intense traumatic histories. The advanced trauma relief training I received at the Center of Mind/Body Medicine informs my teaching and interactions with my students as well as my own playing. Other influences on my work include my acquaintance with Dalcroze techniques, experience with Alexander Technique, and complete Suzuki teacher certification.

Performance is also a large part of what I do. I began accompanying in middle school and I collaborate with musicians of all levels besides giving solo performances.
